Objective: 

This course will enable students to:

  • Gain knowledge about Investigative journalism and risks involved
  • Understand Investigative works undertaken by Journalists in India and world scenario
  • Have an insight about laws that give strength or restrain investigations and nature of litigations
  • Get to know the industry support and orientation for research and tools for undertaking investigative reporting
Unit I: 
Investigative Journalism

Powerful investigative reporting in India: Political Scandals, Corporate Frauds and Crimes. Bhagalpur expose, Bofors scandal, Human Trafficking, Defense Deals, Radia Tapes, Asaram sex scandal and Sting Operations

 

Unit II: 
World Scenario: Investigations and threats to Press

Watergate Scandal, Wikileaks, Undercover Journalists and Wistleblowers, Investigation Support Networks:GIJN and ICIJ network supporting Investigative works globally and SITs in TV channels

 

Unit III: 
Laws governing Information World

Right to Information, Right to Privacy, National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy, Data Protection Bill

 

Unit IV: 
Boundaries and Balancing in Investigations

Ethics of Investigations, Privacy of Sources, Litigations, Legal Safeguards for Journalists, Freedom of the Press

 

Unit V: 
Media Theories

Authoritarian theories, Social Responsibility theories, Normative theories, Cognitive and Psychological theories
